Every entrepreneur has that one moment where reality gives them a free branding consultation.
This was mine.

A few weeks ago, I launched a new initiative under Xyphla called the Service Promotion Agent programme.
The concept was simple.
Create a community where people could promote Xyphla’s services, earn commissions, gain sales experience, and grow together.
I absolutely loved the name.
Service Promotion Agent.
Like every startup founder trying to make things sound cool, I abbreviated it.
SPA.
It looked modern.
It looked clean.
It looked professional.
Or so I thought.
So I went all in.
✅ Designed a logo.
✅ Created a WhatsApp group.
✅ Shared invite links.
✅ Posted promotional content.
✅ Started inviting people.
Everything proudly carried the name SPA.
I couldn’t wait for people to join.
Then the replies started…
“Bro… what’s this SPA group?”

A few minutes later…
“Wait… are you opening a spa now?” 🤨
Another friend replied,
“Looks a little sus.” 😂
And just like that…
The excitement slowly turned into confusion.
Not because people didn’t understand the programme…
They understood the abbreviation differently.
While I had been thinking,
SPA = Service Promotion Agent
Everyone else was thinking,
SPA = Massages, facials, steam rooms and relaxation. 💆😂
That’s when I realised something important.
For weeks, I had been looking at the brand through my own eyes.
The people seeing it for the first time had a completely different interpretation.
And honestly…
They weren’t wrong.
The funniest part?
I had already promoted it everywhere.
The logo.
The WhatsApp group.
The posters.
The announcements.
The invite links.
Everything.
Imagine spending days building a referral programme…
Only to accidentally make people think you’ve started a wellness centre. 😂
So after a healthy amount of roasting from my friends (who apparently moonlight as branding consultants), I made an executive decision.
The letter A had to go.
Goodbye,
SPA.
Hello,
SP Agent. 🚀
One letter.
A much clearer identity.
And significantly fewer awkward questions.
What This Taught Me
One of the biggest lessons in branding is this:
A brand isn’t defined by what you mean. It’s defined by what people understand.
If several people misunderstand the same thing, it’s worth listening.
Sometimes the smallest details create the biggest first impressions.
Thankfully, I learnt that lesson from a WhatsApp group…
Instead of after printing hundreds of flyers or launching a nationwide campaign.
So thank you to everyone who laughed, questioned it, and roasted me.
You probably saved my brand.
P.S.
To everyone who joined expecting massages…
I’m sorry.
The only thing we’re helping people relax is the stress of finding clients. 😄
